Day 6- The Heavenly Road to Hana

They call it "the Heavenly Road to Hana" because the sights along the way are really beautiful. There is nothing in Hana so this trip is really about the journey, not the destination. However, it is not the most pleasant drive I've ever taken. By day 2 on the east side I was wondering why my abs felt sore. Then I realized it was from bracing myself at ever blind turn and one-lane bridge we encountered on the Hana Hwy.
The drive is only 52 miles long but usually takes about 3 hours to make. In some areas the speed limit is only 5 mph! There are 54 one lane bridges and 600 mostly blind turns along the way. You really have to be a patient and courteous driver. I couldn't count the number of times we'd come around a blind turn only to encounter an oncoming car driving over the double yellow lines. There are no shoulders on the road to Hana and definitely no room to be a road hog! The second most assinine thing we saw was when drivers would just ignore that "YEILD to oncoming drivers" sign at the approach of every one-lane bridge!
We'd already be on the bridge and here comes some knucklehead. There is literally nowhere to go..that's why it's called "one-lane"! Anyhoo, during these little "social experiments" I noticed that the majority of these butthead drivers were middle-aged men. This is the problem with people feeling entitled and not thinking the rules are for them, too. (Parents, take note!)
Here is a younger female knucklehead.
Oh yeah, the motion sickness wasn't so great either. The quick back and forth, up and down was very similar to being on a boat.

This beach was very interesting. The sand was multi-colored and the shore was covered in these nice rounded rocks.I love the way the sand has so many colors in it.Do you see Ziggy, too?Ke'anae Peninsula is full of this jagged lava coastline on either side. We stopped here to take pictures of Waikani Falls, as did everone else. We offered to take a photo for another couple and they did the same for us. Coincidentally, they happened to be the couple wearing shorts and tees at the top of Haleakala! Turns out the are from Canada, go figure eh?Just around the next turn our new Canadian friends were flagging us down. He got a little too close to a bridge and/or boulder and blew out the tire along with causing some other body damage. Ouch!

Kerry, being the handyman that he is, directed our pal "Neil" to a spot that was as safe as it gets on the Hana Hwy and assisted in putting on the spare and bending the metal back out of the way.

As we, women, stood by and cheered on our men we found this interesting package that once held a gun...interesting.

Another rainbow. Can you see it?
