Is This a Weed?

While waiting to pick up the boys from school I spotted some unusual flowers in the grass. They were tall, purple, pom-pom like, and coming out of what appeared to be a weed. If I had just seen the foliage in my yard, it would be pulled out immediately. But, who knew it could produce this beautiful flower? I had to take a couple home for a closer look.



When we lived in Baton Rouge we inherited our garden from the previous owners. I would often find new plants sprouting and didn't know what they were. Once I took a sample to a local nursery for an assessment. I asked the lady there if she could tell me if the plant was a weed or not. Her response was, "Do you want it in your garden? If not, then it's a weed. If you do, then it's not."

Interesting... I'll call this one a "wildflower".
