Purple Sage in Bloom

A couple of things I've learned about gardening with native plants are that they are much easier to care for and keep alive, and you are greatly rewarded in blooms! Hedges all over Austin have turned lavendar. The purple sage is very popular in home, business, and roadside landscaping and it is currently in bloom. The sage bushes we have look so fragile with their scrawny, leafless bottom branches. But, they constantly need to be cut back and their velvety little leaves are thick on the newer growth. I made the mistake of taking some cuttings inside for an arrangement, put them in a vase, and realized these were "drought-tolerant" plants. They probably don't like being stuck in a vase full of water. The flowers soon closed back up and looked a little sad. I'll just have to spend more time enjoying them in the yard.
