Every morning we struggle to get Max out the door and on his way to school. It's not just that he's a grumphead, he is very particular about what he wears. I don't know anyone else with a closet and dresser full of clothes that they never wear. But for Max, if it doesn't "feel right" he's not wearing it. That includes anything with seams, tags, collars, snaps, screen printing, bulky pockets, long sleeves, or socks. Many mornings are spent arguing about clothes and changing them several times. It makes getting dressed very difficult especially in the winter.
Then there's the medicine. He hates taking it and has come up with some very creative ways to "pitch the pill". I, of course, have to play Nurse Rached and monitor the whole morning meds fiasco. Needless to say, our mornings drag on and he has been tardy so many times that he now has to make up school time through tutoring, papers, projects, or community service. This was the perfect apportunity to get Max involved with Mobile Loaves & Fishes. I've been boiling 3 dozen eggs and baking 4 dozen cookies each month for MLF to deliver to the homeless. Max usually rides along for the drop off to Church and has lots of deep thoughts about the homeless..."how did they get homeless? why can't they get a job? why can't they live with their family? do you think that person crossing the street is hungry?"
Max has been wanting to help out and this was perfect timing. The boys had off from school on Good Friday, which happened to be my "egg and cookie day". MLF had also planned a big Easter feast on the Monday after which had to be cancelled because of low funds. Part of the feast would be colored hard-boiled eggs, since the eggs are the #1 requested food by the homeless they visit. We decided that they still needed colored eggs that weekend. Max helped get all of the 3 dozen plus eggs boiled and then meticulously dyed each one himself. They were wrapped in plastic (so no one would get colored pockets) and packaged for delivery.
We still had 4 dozen cookies to make. As usual it was off to Charlotte's house for our monthly baking. This time she had a wonderful Paula Dean recipe for "Loaded Oatmeal Cookies with Brown Butter Icing" (minus the nuts for our homeless friends). Did I mention that Charlotte is my new baking mentor?
So Max was in charge of drizzling all the cookies. We bagged them up, two by two, and were ready for our drop off. Luckily, we made it there just in time! The truck was loaded; but there were no eggs for this run. Max proudly talked with the "make-ready" team about the day and took pictures of the truck and kitchen for his school project to come.

Max, I can't wait to see your project and hear about what you've learned and let you teach me some things. (and inspire me to do more for others and be thankful for what we have!)
Oh, and thanks for the recipe. I hope to give this a try soon. Glad you are baking and baking together!
