I'm still struggling with the question of what I want to be when I grow up. I keep teetering between teacher and nurse. All I want to do really is help people in one way or another. I am always compelled to volunteer whenever the opportunity arises. Kerry says that he volunteers through me by earning enough money so that I don't have to work. He's right. I'm now helping out with a group called New Adventures. It's for people with any form of dementia (from Alzheimer's or stroke, etc.) I've been twice and really love it. It's so great to connect with our elders. Besides, mine aren't around anymore. So these guys are kind of like surrogate grandparents. I've hit it off great with G! He's a hoot! He doesn't like to exercise with us. Instead he gets out of his chair and declares, "They're playing my song!", while dancing to the big band music that is playing. The first week we had a great time playing "Go Fish!". Everyone was surprised since the last try at cards didn't go over so well. This week was BINGO. And now G and W are sitting on either side of me during circle time. (I think Kerry is a little jealous.)
It's a wonderful opportunity for caregivers to bring their loved ones to a safe place where they can socialize and have fun while they get some much needed time for errands or anything else on the agenda. I am able to volunteer since Ian is in preschool those mornings; but when school ends I'll have to figure something out. I'll miss those guys too much over the summer!
